Military Training on Semi-Arid Rangeland:

Assessment of potential training impacts on dominant soil types at Holloman Air Force Base

TRACK DUNEMARGIN

Track disturbance at Outcrop-type sites has some negative impacts on soil functionality although total recovery is likely over a six year period. There is a low risk of water erosion following track treatment and one can expect at least 12 months for vegetation to recover following disturbance. Microbiotic crust recovery is likely to take longer than six years following treatment and soil infiltration rates are likely to be negatively affected by repeated disturbance within six years of first treatment. Some caution should be used applying track disturbance to Outcrop-type sites, but repeated disturbance can occur between four and six years of first disturbance without major risk to permanent site damage.
