Abstract:

This ongoing dataset contains annual aboveground net primary productivity (ANPP) data from a study at the Jornada Experimental Range (JER) in southern New Mexico. The study was designed to assess the effect of interannual variability in precipitation on average aboveground net primary productivity (ANPP) in Chihuahuan Desert grasslands. The study began in 2009, has five precipitation treatments (see Methods) and contains 50 plots (10 per treatment). This data package contains 6-year (2009 to 2014) means of ANPP per plot. Annual and more recent data are available and will be released pending an upcoming publication.

Abstract:

LTER-I Transect plant line intercept data. This data set is as transcribed (UNSORTED) from cassette tape with one intercept observation per record. Data consist of week number, transect, station, segment number, plant species, and length of species intercepted by line stretched between 2 rebar the length of the 30 meter plant line intercept transect. Measurements are made on 30-meter line intercept transects located perpendicular to each of 91 stations on each of the 2.7 km long Control, Treatment, and Alternate Control Transects established at the beginning of LTER-I. Each plant line transect is divided into 6 5-meter segments. Annuals are measured only in the first meter of segments 1, 2, and 3 and in the last meter of segments 4, 5, and 6. Abstract:

On March 19, 2000, an arson burn occurred of 2.5 acres of the upper grassland area on the Summerford bajada just below the powerline road. The area affected included portions of the LTER-I Transect Plant Line Intercept study that was begun in 1982. To evaluate the impact of the burn on those lines, the line intercepts were read for the upper grassland area extending from immediately above the creosotebush fringe to the base of Summerford Mountain. The stations measured were C73-C89, T75-T90, and X76-X91 (Control, Treatment, and Alternate Control, respectively). Measurements were made immediately after the burn, after the spring growing season, and after the fall growing season in 2000 only. In the initial sampling period, the burn area intercepted by the line was noted in the data set using a "species" code of BURN. Average percent coverage of each plant species per 5-meter segment along a 30-meter line intercept perpendicular to each of 91 stations on each of the three LTER-I permanent transects. Abstract:

In the spring of 1982, as part of the establishment of the Jornada Long-Term Ecological Research site in southern New Mexico, a 135 ha portion of a 1500 ha, internally drained, watershed was exclosed from grazing by domestic livestock. Prior to exclosure the watershed, as well as the rest of the Jornada basin, had been moderately to heavily grazed for the past 100 years. Concurrent with grazing, the vegetation had undergone a dramatic change from desert grassland, with an almost continuous cover of C4 perennial grasses, to isolated patches of the original grassland in a mosaic with desert shrub dominated plant communities (Buffington and Herbel, 1965).  Three parallel transects (2.7 km in length) run from the middle of the College Playa up into the foot of Mt. Summerford. The Control transect is to the west, the Treatment transect is to the east side of the Control transect, and the Alternate Control is to the east of the Treatment transect. Abstract:

Sum of dry mass removed for each plant growth form from each plot of biodiversity experiment. Amount of plant material removed in initial establishment of plant diversity treatments was recorded for later use as covariate or measure of disturbance. Material was weighed in the field by species, and species-level data are available from Huenneke; however, this file summarizes plant material removed (dry mass) by growth form (shrub, subshrub, perennial grass, succulent) and by total live dry mass. Also provided are mass of dead material collected from plots (same species as live material removed for each treatment) and total dry mass, live plus dead.

Abstract:

Arid and semi‐arid ecosystems often exhibit diverse plant growth forms in water‐limited environments, but it is unclear whether resource competition (interference) is actually important in structuring communities. We chose a diverse Chihuahuan desert shrubland to examine the response of the plant community to experimental removals of selected perennial plant species or groups of species. Four treatments involved the removal of all individuals of all species of a single functional group (functional group removals: shrub removal, succulent removal, subshrub removal, perennial grass removal). Three other treatments involved removing species within functional groups. These seven treatments plus a control (no plants removed) were replicated six times each in 25×25 m experimental plots, in summer 1995. Permanent belt transects were surveyed for number and sizes of all vascular plants in spring and fall in 1997, 1999, 2000, and 2001. Those plots from which the dominant shrub, Larrea tridentata, was removed had not recovered in total plant cover or volume by 2001, but cover and volume in all other treatments were similar to those in control plots. Canopy Gap and Basal Gap Intercept data are collected annually for this project beginning in 2008. No data were collected in 2011. There are 4 pairs of plots consisting of control and treatment. Each plot is 8x8 meters with an 8x8 meter buffer plot above and below it. Treatment plots have connectivity modules (conmods) installed to decrease gap size between perennials. Buffer plots do not have conmods. Four 24-meter transects run through the plot and 2 buffer plots. These transects are spaced 0.8, 2.8, 4.3, and 7.2 meters across the plots (denoted as 1, 3, 5, and 7 meters in the database), paralleling the long axis of the combined buffer plots and central plot.

    Line-Point Intercept data are collected annually for this project beginning in 2008. No data were
    collected in 2011. There are 4 pairs of plots consisting of control and treatment. Each plot is

    Repeat digital groundbased photos are taken once to twice a year to document plant litter and
    soil deposition or removal by wind and water transport on ten microplots located on each of the
    8 plots at each of the Aeolian, Dona Ana, and Gravelly Ridges sites. Five photos are taken of
    each microplot: One overhead (from directly over the microplot) and 4 lateral views at ground
    level of the microplot from each cardinal direction.

   Digital filenames are fully descriptive of the site, plot, microplot, photo view, and date taken.

Abstract:

BACKGROUND. In the spring of 1982, as part of the establishment of the Jornada Long-Term Ecological Research site in southern New Mexico, a 135 ha portion of a 1500 ha, internally drained, watershed was exclosed from grazing by domestic livestock. Prior to exclosure the watershed, as well as the rest of the Jornada basin, had been moderately to heavily grazed for the past 100 years. Concurrent with grazing, the vegetation had undergone a dramatic change from desert grassland, with an almost continuous cover of C4 perennial grasses, to isolated patches of the original grassland in a mosaic with desert shrub dominated plant communities (Buffington and Herbel, 1965). The exclosure lies along a northeast facing piedmont slope at the base of a steep isolated mountain peak, and covers a variety of component landforms from the foot of the mountain to the basin floor. This provided the opportunity to investigate the response of vegetation with respect to landscape characteristics as well as release from grazing. Abstract:

Overview: In semiarid ecosystems the diversity of plant functional types ( grasses, shrubs, succulents, and so on) and of species may interact with the severe stresses imposed by the desert environment to influence ecosystem processes. Erosion and transport of surface sediment by wind and water is one process that may be affected by the physical structure of the plant community. The Jornada plant diversity experiment, in which the diversity and structure of the plant community have been manipulated in large (25 m x 25 m) plots, offers the opportunity to examine the relative importance of vegetation characteristics and landscape position in determining rates of sediment movement within the plots. Each of the 48 plots of the plant diversity experiment contains 5 pans or trays on the downslope side; these accumulate sediments and plant litter that are moving within the plots (carried by wind or by water). Data have been collected on the amount of sediment accumulated in the pans during rainy and during dry seasons, with material sorted and weighed as fine (< 2 mm diameter) or coarse > 2 mm) mineral sediment, plant litter, or rabbit/jackrabbit pellets. Abstract:

The purpose of this study is to quantify vegetation dynamics in response to lagomorph and shrub exclusion. Data consist of vertical line intercept measures of the perennial grasses, suffretescents and shrubs. Sixteen plots at each of 3 sites (Gravelly Ridges, Dona Ana exclosure, and Parker Tank) were established in 1938-39 by Ken Valentine. Plots were 21.3 x 21.3 m in 4 rows of 4 plots with a 7.6 m buffer zone. All plots were sampled before treatments. Plots were divided into east and west halves and 14 randomly located 10.65 m transects were located in each half plot. Vegetation (black grama, dropseeds, bush muhly, fluff grass, other grasses, creosotebush, honey mesquite, tarbush, mariola, and other shrubs) was measured using vertical line point intercepts. Plots have been re-read in 1947, 1956, 1960, 1967, 1989, 1995, and 2001 for Gravelly Ridges and 1939, 1947, 1960, 1967, and 2001 for Dona Ana and Parker Tank using the same methods.
