AB - Net photosynthetic rate (Pn) and leaf resistance (r1) to transpiration were evaluated while irradiating either the adaxial or abaxial leaf surfaces of *Perezia nana* (desert holly) and *Helianthus annus* (sunflower). The *P. nana* leaves are anatomically isolateral, borne vertically, and equal numbers of leaves are oriented in each of the four cardinal directions. *H. annus* leaves are borne horizontally and are anatomically anisolateral. *P. nana* showed no significant differences between Pn and r1 of the two surfaces whereas *H. annus* did. These data are discussed with respect to leaf display, mesophyll anatomy and stomatal density.
