The 17th Wildland Shrub Symposium is looking for sponsors. This symposium, held every two years, has been a very useful venue for transfer of science-based information relative to the management and conservation of western lands. The 17th symposium this May in Las Cruces has been structured to provide these same benefits to participants. The symposium has been developed with a low registration fee ($75 for the three day event) to encourage participation. We have also solicited over 40 companies to participate in a trade show at the symposium that would highlight natural resource products and services specific to the Southwest.

The symposium is primarily sponsored and organized by the Shrub Research Consortium, New Mexico State University, the USDA Agricultural Research Service Unit based at the Jornada, and the USDA Forest Service Rocky Mountain Research Station. In addition, in recognition of the Centennial Anniversary of the USDA research unit based at the Jornada, this ARS unit is providing a platinum level of sponsorship of $10,000 in addition to the in-kind support being provided in organizing and hosting this event.

Sponsorship levels are bronze ($500), silver ($1,000), or gold ($2,500). Your sponsorship will be specifically directed towards support for the mid symposium field tours on Wednesday, May 23, and the publication of the symposium proceedings. (Though the proceedings will be made available free through various web sites post-symposium, we still need to produce at least 100 hard copies for distribution to various library outlets across the nation and around the world.)

We certainly understand that we are asking for this support during austere budgetary times. However, the need for science-based information in support of the conservation and management of land and its natural resources remains a significant issue. This symposium is a positive, effective and constructive mechanism to continue to provide this kind of needed information.
