Transitions between states

We investigate four types of state transitions within geomorphic units to explore the effects of fine-scale changes in patch structure, transport vectors, and environmental drivers. A suite of JRN projects build upon and integrate existing long-term data to investigate transitions within geomorphic units, between geomorphic units and explore regional dynamics of the Chihuahuan Desert:

Major Ecosystem Transitions within Geomorphic Units:

Grasslands → Shrublands Transitions (the desertification story)

Shrublands → Grasslands Transitions (grass recovery following shrub encroachment)

Shrublands → Shrublands Transitions (transitions among shrub-dominated states)

Shrublands or Grasslands → Novel States (transitions to novel states)
